Govt to ban new car subsidized fuel use

The government says it will not allow cars made after 2005 to use subsidized fuel starting in January.

“The owners must be wealthy people, so they have to use unsubsidized fuel,” Coordinating Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa told reporters in Jakarta on Monday.

Hatta said that the government was still working on how to implement the proposal.

Experts have previously said that such a policy would be ineffective and fail to appreciably reduce subsidized fuel use.
