Renewables developer Gurīn Energy has appointed Indonesia’s former foreign affairs, Retno Marsudi, to its board of directors.

Marsudi held the post of minister for foreign affairs in the cabinet of Indonesian president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo between 2014 and October 2024, when Jokowi’s term concluded.

She joins the Singapore-headquartered renewables firm as an independent non-executive director to provide strategic guidance to Gurīn’s management team and bolster governance, according to a press statement.

Her appointment comes the week after the Indonesian government announced a target of adding 75 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy over the next 15 years. Among Gurin’s Indonesian ventures is a deal to export 3.4 GW of solar power to Singapore through Vanda RE, a joint venture it holds a majority stake.

Over four decades of public service, Marsudi has served as head of Indonesia’s special envoy to Myanmar for regional grouping Asean and Indonesian ambassador to Norway, Iceland and the Netherlands. Her most recent high-profile appointment, made this year, was as the United Nations’ special envoy on water.

Gurīn chairman Vimal Vallabh said Marsudi’s “wide-ranging experience, keen strategic eye and deep regional knowledge” would help the company in its mission to accelerate the energy transition in Asia.

Gurīn currently has 7 GW of solar, wind and storage projects in various stages of development in Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines.
