Hanwha Q CELLS to build 800 MW module fab in Malaysia

Germany-based Hanwha Q CELLS will build a large-scale module factory at its existing site in Cyberjaya, Malaysia.

Boasting a total capacity of 800 MW, the new fab will include four production lines and automated equipment for the company’s high performing solar modules.

The company declined to say how much it would invest in the new manufacturing complex.

Hanwha Q CELLS, which is currently increasing its capacities in cell production, said the investment in a new module production facility underscores its “consistent growth path and positive business outlook.”

In August, Hanwha Q CELLS said it was increasing its total production capacity to more than 1.5 GW by the end of the year. The company added that it had been strongly expanding its business and expects 2014 shipments of between 1 and 1.2 GW as well as positive full-year-figures.

“By building module facilities of 800 MW at our site in Malaysia, Hanwha Q CELLS takes the next step in becoming one of the globally leading companies in the photovoltaics industry,” said Hanwha Q CELLS CEO Charles Kim said. “The new factory will strengthen our position to satisfy the heightened demand of our customers.”

The construction of the module production facility at the Cyberjaya site will begin in early 2015. The new production lines are scheduled to be ready for a first test production in the third quarter of 2015 and are expected to reach full utilisation by early 2016.

“The new module fab in Cyberjaya is the logical next step in carrying forward the company’s international setup of R&D and mass production,” Kim added.

Seong Joo Ryu, managing director of Hanwha Q CELLS Malaysia, said, “Hanwha Q CELLS Malaysia is ready to become the company’s main hub for the sustainable mass production of high quality solar cells and modules at competitive costs.” In combining cell and module manufacturing in one production site, the company said it would optimise production cycle times and reduces logistics costs.
