Ill health claims still plaguing wind projects

Wind energy developer RATCH Australia is headed to a public meeting to allay community concerns about the potential negative impacts from the proposed Mount Emerald Wind Farm in north Queensland. Some local residents have objected to the 75+ turbine project, citing problems with noise and harmful environmental effects.

Australia’s wind industry has been embroiled in a debate about possible health problems due to wind turbines. Ill health effects from turbine noise have not been proven. Although research is underway in Australia, the health effects are not an issue in the European nations that have lived with wind turbines for decades.

RATCH said the AUS$700 million project - including a smaller wind farm nearby - will bring 250 jobs and $100 million into the remote community during construction.
