The European Commission’s bid to speed up progress on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from aviation by including the sector in its emissions trading scheme may be bearing fruit. Friday meetings of the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization resulted in a time-bound roadmap for developing a global system or network of regional initiatives to cut carbon emissions.
Since 1 January, the EU has required all airlines flying in and out of Europe to pay for the carbon they emit. However, the United States, China and India are not cooperating with the rules, claiming they infringe on sovereign rights. The European Commission has said it would change its aviation emissions rules if comparable schemes were put in place.
