India sweetens the deal with solar power investors

India is planning to expand its grid-connected solar capacity eight-fold by 2017, according to a new policy released by its Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The draft policy states that the country plans to ramp up its solar plant capacity to 9,000 megawatts starting with a planned auction of 1,650 megawatts of photovoltaic capacity by the central government next year. India also plans to give out grants to reduce project costs by investors which will cover 40 per cent of the upfront cost of building projects. The incentives are hoped to increase solar investments in India and to reduce the cost of solar power.
