India to push for Kyoto extension in Doha

India will be joining the bloc composed of China, Brazil, and South Africa in next week’s climate talks in a bid to negotiate an extension of the Kyoto Protocol. RR Rashmi, who will be India’s chief climate negotiator in Doha, said that if the Kyoto Protocol is not extended then the world will have to wait eight years till 2020 without any global climate pact. A Kyoto extension will be an arrangement pending the 2020 implementation of a global emissions reduction deal. Previous UN climate talks have failed to result in binding commitments to cut carbon emissions and the Kyoto Protocol is set to expire at the end of the year.
