Kuching gets tourism award

Well-planned, clean and green South Kuching City Council (MBKS) has earned another international award.

The Tourist City Award presented at Chengdu, China, recently was the second international recognition for Kuching’s beautiful surrounding following the Health City Award that was presented by the World Health Organisation in 2004.

MBKS chairman James Chan said yesterday it was an honour that should be credited to the state’s decision makers and the people of Kuching as a whole for keeping the city clean.

“MBKS will continue to maintain its culture of diligence and alertness to improve the city day after day to provide a liveable space not only to local residents but also to tourists.”

The win was announced at the Second World Cities Scientific Development Forum and the First Mayors’ Summit on Disaster Risk Reduction co-organised by the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, World Cities Scientific Development Alliance and Sister Cities International held from Aug 11 to 13.

Nearly 200 participants from more than 30 countries attended the forum, including the United States, Canada, South Africa, China, Costa Rica, Ireland, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Lebanon, Malaysia, Pakistan, Jamaica, Palestine, the Philippines, Poland, Senegal, Uganda and Vietnam.

Xining of China shared the honour of winning the Tourist City Award with Kuching.

Other awards presented during the forum were the Ecological City Award that was presented to Saldanha Bay of South Africa and Dali of China. The Cultural City Award was presented to Cincinnati of the United States and Luoyang of China.
