Kwek Leng Joo elected president of Singapore Compact for CSR

Managing director of City Developments Kwek Leng Joo has been elected as president of Singapore Compact for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for a three-year term, starting 2012.

He takes over from Hyflux CEO, Olivia Lum, who completed her second term this year.

Mr Kwek said while there has been a significant increase in Singapore Compact’s membership base over the past few years, convincing businesses to embrace CSR as part of their corporate and business strategy remains an uphill task.

That’s why his primary focus for Singapore Compact includes giving greater support to local businesses to initiate and sustain their CSR programmes and reporting.

Another main focus - expand its outreach particularly in engaging youths who will form the next generation of business leaders to champion CSR when they join the workforce.

Mr Kwek said: “I am honoured to take on this new role to bring forward the CSR agenda in Singapore as CSR has become a global business trend. From my humble experience, I believe that CSR, if applied strategically, could help businesses enhance their performance and create greater value for stakeholders, the community and the environment.”

The Singapore Compact for CSR is a national CSR society and country focal point for the United Nations (UN) Global Compact in Singapore.

It was initiated by the national tripartite partners, the Singapore National Employers Federation, the National Trades Union Congress, Singapore Business Federation and Manpower Ministry.
