Lights dim for Australia’s small-scale solar businesses

The Australian government has decided to cut incentives to small-scale solar photovoltaics six months ahead of schedule as they seek to reduce consumer energy bills by up to AUS$100 million next year. Small scale renewable projects have been receiving tradable certificates as part of the government’s Renewable Energy Target scheme. Under this, solar PV installations also qualify for Solar Credits multiplier mechanism which double their tradable certificates under the RET. The government said cutting the incentives will also level the playing in the solar market. The move has been criticised by the industry as untimely and unnecessary.
