Small loans and big movie stars working together can go a long way towards ridding the world of clean water poverty. That is the idea behind Matt Damon’s non-profit Water.org, which he co-founded with water technology expert Gary White. The duo aims for nothing less than access to clean water and sanitation for everyone on Earth during their lifetimes.

Currently focused on bringing clean water to 50,000 Haitians, the project has set an interim goal of reaching 100 million people by 2020 through micro-loans from its WaterCredit programme. Water.org will work with retailers, lending institutions, local NGOs and corporate foundations, and will also seek new solutions through its US$10 million New Ventures fund.
