Many companies in Bali, Nusa Tenggara in red category

Twenty-four companies in the Bali and Nusa Tenggara regions have been classified in the red category by the Ministry of Environment.

“We have classified 24 out of 32 companies in Bali and Nusa Tenggara in the red category,” said Minister of Environment Balthasar Kambuaya in Denpasar on Thursday.

He noted that the red category companies (18 in Bali, 5 in West Nusa Tenggara and 1 in East Tenggara) have not been following the regulations of the Environment Article.

“We will organize an environmental management coaching program for the 18 companies in Bali, in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy,” said Kambuaya.

The 18 red category companies in Bali are operating in the hotel and tourism industry.

According to Kambuaya, this is ironic as the environment quality index in Bali is the highest in Indonesia at 99.65 points.

A fish canning company at Jembrana, in Bali, and a mining company in East Nusa Tenggara have been in the black category since 2010.

Companies that do not regulate environmental management and cause environmental damage and pollution are classified in the black category.

Kambuaya also pointed out the Ministry of Environment has threatened to revoke the license of the fish canning company in Bali.

“We have given them the deadline of July 2012 to revise their waste management system; we will revoke their license if they do not comply within the given time frame,” he added.

According to data from the Ministry of Environment, 49 out of the 1,200 companies in Indonesia are in the black category and most of them are in the mining and palm farming industries.

The Ministry of Environment will keep evaluating the feasibility of waste and environmental management systems and their impact on the communities near the locations of companies.
