More opportunity or widening rift in Doha?

The UN climate talks have opened in Doha, Qatar amid concerns that rifts between developing economies and richer nations may get in the way of progress in the talks again this year. But the newly-elected COP 18 President H E Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah said the meeting was a golden opportunity to move forward with a climate deal. He said the meeting in Doha is critical in facing the common challenge of climate change. But some delegates like the World Resources Institute have also challenged the Qatari government to disclose their own actions to reduce their carbon emissions, amid criticisms on the decision to hold the UN climate conference in a country with some of the highest per capita emissions in the world.
