New facility to jumpstart Malaysia’s abysmal recycling

A new RM600,000 facility in Kuala Selangor in Malaysia - the first of its kind in the nation - has demonstrated it can boost local recycling rates from 2 per cent to 22 per cent. The Materials Recovery Facility is operated by Malaysia’s Worldwide Landfills and has a capacity of 2,100 tonnes of solid waste per day. The government urged more private companies to undertake such initiaves to help raise the national recycling average from its current level of 5 per cent.
