Malaysia generated about 163,000 tonnes of used electronic products or e-waste last year, says Penang Department of Environment (DOE) director Datuk Hassan Mat.
“E-waste has caused environmental pollution and has an adverse impact on public health. To counter such problems, Penang has developed a project model for the collection of used electronic and electrical products.
“The project, conducted with the help of the Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA), started last month and is expected to be completed by March 2013,” he said here yesterday.
The agency’s e-waste expert Hideaki Wada said the project is meant to enhance the recycling of e-waste among households, adding that seminars and workshops had been planned.
Penang will be the first state in the country to implement such a project.
State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh had said the success of the project could be used as a model to be applied throughout the country.
