Queensland’s practical climate approach

State Environment Minister Andrew Powell says the Queensland government has shed the “double-dipping” of climate change mitigation and is focusing on “practical changes” to cope with wild weather.

Mr Powell was commenting after the release on Wednesday of a report from the Climate Commission, which linked wild weather events to increasing greenhouse gas emissions.

“The Newman government, like all other jurisdictions, came to an agreement with the federal government through COAG last year to remove duplication of roles in relation to climate change mitigation and the implementation of the carbon tax,” Mr Powell said.

“As such, mitigation programs are being implemented by the federal government. The Queensland government is focusing on adaptation and building resilience in communities.”

The Campbell Newman-led Liberal National Party government abolished Labor’s Office of Climate Change and the Climate Change Centre of Excellence at Indooroopilly when it won office in 2012.
