PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP) has cooperated with state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina in the use of hydrocarbon refrigerant at RAPP’s operational facilities in Pangkalan Kerinci, Pelalawan, Riau.
“With the cooperation, RAPP will replace the environmentally unfriendly synthetic freon with the musicool refrigerant produced by Pertamina, which saves electricity and is environmentally friendly,” RAPP director Mulia Nauli said here on Tuesday.
He added that RAPP used a lot of freon for the 6,000 air conditioners at its office facilities in Pelalawan, but after the cooperation with Pertamina, RAPP would replace the synthetic freon with hydrocarbon refrigerant.
Mulia said the cooperation with Pertamina had been recorded in a memorandum of understanding, adding that the use of environmentally friendly products had become part of the company’s commitment to increase global competitiveness and protect the environment.
He noted the synthetic freon used in air conditioners was one of the environmentally dangerous substances that could cause ozone depletion.
“The decision is in line with the company’s policy, which focuses on efficiency in operations, and with the government’s policy of carbon emissions reduction and energy saving,” Mulia explained.
Pertamina LPG sales area manager for Riau-West Sumatra Nyoman Sumarja said Pertamina would initially supply around six tons of hydrocarbon refrigerant for RAPP operations.
“It will not only be used for air conditioners, but also for cooling engines in the RAPP factory,” he told ANTARA News.
Pertamina’s musicool is an alternative product to synthetic coolants, which contain poisonous substances such as CFC, HCFC and HCF, and have the potential to damage the ozone layer and cause global warming.
“Pertamina welcomes private parties operating in the forestry industry in Riau who would like to use the environmentally friendly domestic product,” he said.
