Sisdole locals to be taught composting

The Solid Waste Management Technical Support Centre is all set to provide various training to women living near the Sisdole Sanitary Landfill Site.

As part of the programme, women from four villages –– Chauthe, Okharpauwa, Khumari and Duipiple will be trained in organic waste composting and recycling in the first phase, the centre said.

“The training will begin from March 25 for women from the four VDCs,” said Sumitra Amatya, executive director at the centre. “The programme will be held for four days, a day in each VDC,” she added. “Lawmaker Bimala Subedi has been coordinating with locals to launch the programme.”

Amatya said the centre was also planning to impart income generating skills to women living near the landfill site and surrounding areas. “They will be imparted with skills in tailoring, handicraft, health, vegetable farming and veterinary activities. We have written to the Ministry of Labour and Transport Management, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Health and Population to do their bit,” she said.

Meanwhile, the centre informed that a compost plant at the Sisdole Landfill Site was ready for operation. “We will start using it soon,” Amatya said. “We are also planning to grow vegetation in the buffer zone of the landfill site. The plantation will be carried out in coordination with Nepal Academy of Science and Technology, which is working to select appropriate plant species,” added Amatya.

Kathmandu Valley produces about 600 metric tonnes of waste every day. About 500 metric tonnes of waste the is disposed at the Sisdole Site daily. Around 350 metric tonnes of waste is generated each day in Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
