Sustainable business guide for New Zealand

The Sustainable Business Network has released a guide to New Zealand’s top green businesses and those who’ve shown interest in following suit.

The Sustainable Business Directory is an online list of the SBN’s members, which span almost 500 companies. The directory can be searched by keyword, business category and location and gives information about each company’s sustainability credentials.

It follows a new smartphone app in April by Conscious Consumers, a Wellington-based social enterprise that offers environmental, community and ethical accreditation for hospitality businesses and suppliers.

The threshold to signing up for the SBN’s directory is relatively low - rather than meeting specific environmental criteria, all companies need to do is sign up for the SBN.

Membership is open to businesses who express an interest in sustainability (though this is at the SBN Board’s discretion) and costs between $210 to $6000.

“We encourage users of the directory to ask sustainability-related questions of the organisations listed,” SBN CEO Rachel Brown said in a press statement.

“While they are at different stages of their sustainability journey, and no business is perfect, they have all shown a commitment to sustainability by joining our network.”

The SBN is holding a launch party for the directory on May 8 at Salt Cafe in the NZI Building in Auckland with speakers including Goodsense Marketing’s Kath Dewar and Enspiral’s Chloe Waretini.
