Taiwan bike network set for year-end launch

A 1,005-kilometer round-Taiwan bike network will open by the end of the year, underscoring ROC government efforts to further boost the sport and cycling industry nationwide.

“We are committed to establishing Taiwan as a biking haven for enthusiasts from home and abroad,” President Ma Ying-jeou said March 18 at the opening ceremony of Taipei International Cycle Show.

“The popularity of cycling, as well as projects such as the network and the Tour de Taiwan race, bear testament to our determination in this regard.”

Constructed by the ministries of Education and Transportation and Communications, the existing 4,700-kilometer network includes a number of spur paths to cultural sites like Chimei Museum in Tainan City and National Palace Museum Southern Branch in Taibao, Chiayi County. It is also equipped with distance markers, right-of-way signs and special traffic lights at busy suburban intersections.

In addition, refreshment and basic service facilities are set up at convenience stores, police stations and supermarkets every eight to 12 kilometers along the network. Bike rentals will also be offered at 21 Taiwan Railways Administration stations.

According to the MOTC, the round-Taiwan component of the network can be completed in seven to 12 days.

“We are confident the network can provide cycling enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to exercise and enjoy the beauty of Taiwan,” Ma said. “No stone is to be left unturned in taking development of this increasingly popular recreation activity to new heights.”
