Taiwan’s energy-saving efforts pay off

Taiwan’s energy efficiency improved by almost 4 percent in 2010, in line with the government’s goal of gradually turning the nation into a low-carbon emission community, the Bureau of Energy under the Ministry of Economic Affairs said March 16.

“The nation’s energy efficiency increased at a rapid pace last year, thanks to the government’s energy-saving plans and the active desire by the public to reduce carbon emissions,” an unnamed BOE official said.

“The high price of energy worldwide played a part in the improvement as well,” the official added.

“Issues such as reductions in carbon dioxide emissions and climate change have led people to understand the importance of saving energy,” according to the Cabinet-level Environmental Protection Administration.

In response to global climate change, the government designated 2010 an Energy-Conservation and Carbon-Reduction Year.

The government has also formulated a General Plan for National Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction, according to which Taiwan commits itself to increasing its energy efficiency by 2 percent each year between 2008 and 2015.
