Taiwan’s shrimping loss is Thailand’s gain

It was a slump in Taiwan’s shrimp business that eventually paved the way for Thai firm Charoen Pokphand Foods Plc (CP) to expand into the aquaculture industry. Speaking at the Global Aquaculture Outlook 2012 in Bangkok, CP vice-chairman Chingchai Lohawatanakul said following the decline of Taiwan’s shrimp business in the 1980s, they studied the aquaculture of black tiger prawn with the help of academics. After one year and a good production, they took advantage of the world supply shortfall of shrimp, gradually becoming the world’s top shrimp producer and exporter. Lohawatanakul said they also strive to make their aquaculture business a sustainable one through better management of their systems of feeding, incubation, farming, processing and marketing.
