UK firms see huge potential in renewable energy

A British trade mission sees huge potential in the Philippine renewable energy sector, especially wind and tidal sources.

“Renewable energy is as important for the Philippines as it is for the UK. Expanded use of energy sources such as biomass, wind, solar and hydropower can reduce reliance on uncertain supplies of traditional fossil fuels like coal and oil. That’s important for our energy security, and for tackling climate change,” British Ambassador Stephen Lillie said.

He said the trade mission stressed the British government’s commitment to provide wider support for the development of a green economy in the Philippines.

Lillie said British companies earlier announced plans for almost £2.5 billion (P170 billion) worth of investment in renewable energy projects in the UK, with the potential to create almost 12,000 jobs.

“The UK has made some impressive steps forward in developing renewable energy use. We have the world’s largest installed capacity of offshore wind energy, while UK companies and research institutions are world leaders in developing technology to generate electricity from ocean tides. The potential to apply this in the Philippines is very exciting,” Lillie said.

Visiting experts from five UK-based companies recently shared their knowledge and experience in developing, designing and delivering renewable energy projects.
