UK tech firm sets up research lab in Taiwan

Oxford Instruments PLC, a U.K.-based high-tech tool systems company, has partnered with Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute in setting up a research center for light-emitting diodes, ITRI said Feb. 23.

The joint lab will focus on wafer-level packaging processes and integrated micro-structure technologies for high-brightness LEDs, according to ITRI, saying the move will benefit the local LED packaging industry.

“With Taiwan’s most advanced Microelectromechanical Systems Open lab, ITRI will provide the best research and development capability in the field of LED packaging,” said ITRI President Shyu Jyuo-min.

It is hoped that the partnership will accelerate technology integration for LED wafer packaging, to ensure competitiveness of the industries in both Taiwan and the U.K., Shyu noted.

Oxford Instruments CEO Jonathan Flint said ITRI’s research capabilities in LED will benefit the company’s customer base in the Asia-Pacific. The company is also seeking business partnership with Taiwan LED firms, Flint added.

Established in 1959, Oxford Instruments is the first commercial spin-out company from the University of Oxford, with over 40 branch offices and a dozen factories worldwide.
