Use of fermentation heat for turning sewage sludge into fuel

A project to commercialize a new technology that produces solid fuel from sewage sludge as a replacement of coal is being examined. The new technology differs from conventional ones in that it uses the fermentation heat of sewage sludge itself to dry the sludge. It is expected that this eliminates the use of fossil fuel and provides environmental and economical advantages.

Fukui Prefecture is considering implementation of this project. In the experimental work conducted from July 2011 to May 2012, the prefecture produced test fuel, burned it in a boiler, and confirmed its quality and safety.
