Alternative energy company Windlab Systems, which has a 750 megawatt wind farm planned near Hughenden, has been named one of the world’s best clean energy companies.
Windlab became only the second Australian company to win a place on the Global Cleantech 100 list at a ceremony in Washington DC recently.
A panel of experts from the energy, renewables and investment industries ranked the Top 100 companies from more than 6600 nominations from 45 countries.
The panel selected the top 100 companies based on those most likely to make a significant market impact overt the next five to 10 years.
Windlab was named one of the top 10 Cleantech companies in the Asia Pacific region.
Windlab chief executive officer (CEO) Roger Price said the honour was a great reward for the company’s research efforts.
“We are delighted to be named in the Global Cleantech Top 100,” he said.
“It is well deserved recognition for our innovative science and the hard work and dedication of our team.
“However it may be somewhat of a hollow victory for the company which has had to reconsider the future of its ambitious Kennedy Windfarm project near Hughenden after Xstrata nixed plans to build the proposed CopperString transmission line.
The line was to connect Mount Isa and the North West town to the national grid and give renewable energy companies the opportunity to sell power to the National Electricity Market.
A plan has been mooted to build a smaller scale line in CopperString’s place which could be a lifeline to the Kennedy Wind Farm and other renewable projects planned for the region.
