Xiamen plans seawater desalination project in Xiang’an District

According to Xiamen Daily, Xiamen city has recently put the construction of a seawater desalination demonstration project in Xiang’an District on its agenda following major breakthroughs in seawater desalination technologies.

The latest plan, compiled by relevant departments, says that Xiamen will desalinate over 50,000 tons of seawater by the year 2020, and gradually build a sustainable water supply system with reservoirs as its main source, the Jiulong River as its secondary source and desalinated sea water as a backup for emergency use.

The city has already successfully developed self-contained seawater desalination equipment for use on boats and land. And a major breakthrough in key technologies has brought down the power consumption of seawater desalination to less than 3 kWh per ton, much lower than the national average of 5 kWh per ton.
