Student-initiated eco-projects have taken on creative applications of technology and new media.
Four winners of these projects will take part in the 2012 Bayer Young Environmental Envoy forum in Germany.
Under the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy programme, tertiary students between 17 and 24 years old propose project ideas to address environmental-related situations within their school or community.
One winner is 23-year-old Joyce Chee from Nanyang Technological University.
She created an energy-saving alternative to the big-screen LCD displays.
Through the VOsensor phone application she co-created with her friends, users have an option to view the video on their smartphones.
The technology involves QR codes and Near-Field Communication (NFC) chips.
This means users can either scan the QR codes through the VOsensor application, or tap the NFC chips to view the video on their smartphones.
However, Ms Chee said the application was not created to replace the big-screens.
“Hopefully when people see the end product (and) the effectiveness of their advertising strategy for VOsensor, (it) can actually be comparable to even big-screen TV monitors. It can slow down the growth of LCD TV monitors… and that’s what we are actually looking for,” she said.
