247Solar Inc., developer of breakthrough clean energy solutions for round-the-clock zero-carbon electricity and industrial-grade heat, today announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Morocco’s Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) to study the production of Green Hydrogen and Ammonia powered by 247Solar’s innovative next-generation Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and thermal energy storage technologies.
The undertaking is intended in part to demonstrate the feasibility and competitiveness of 247Solar’s innovative CSP to produce electricity to supply green hydrogen/ammonia plants to decarbonise fertiliser production. Morocco’s OCP Group, the world’s largest producer of phosphates, has announced an investment for a 1 million tons-per-year green ammonia plant in 2027 and a 3 million tons-per-year green ammonia plant in 2032.
Equipment to produce hydrogen and ammonia requires electrical energy which can be called green only if it’s produced using 100% clean power. 247Solar’s unique technologies will provide the production equipment with the around-the-clock clean electricity and heat required to produce the lowest LCOE.
Under the MOU, the parties form a strategic partnership to study the integration of green electricity and heat to supply a Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Pilot, and to explore its feasibility for large-scale production of green hydrogen and ammonia and possibly green desalination systems as well.
“OCP has already announced an historical investment of $13 billion to be carbon neutral in 2030 for its own activities and carbon neutral for indirect emissions by 2040. We are thrilled to have an opportunity to contribute to this effort.”
Mr Mohamed Bousseta, Innovate for Industry Director at UM6P, added: “We are proud to collaborate with 247Solar to study the integration of this new technology to green ammonia projects. About 70% of the LCOH is coming from green electricity cost so the LCOE is a key parameter for a competitive LCOA of green ammonia production as well as for a competitive cost of desalination units.”
About Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P)
Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) is a Moroccan non-profit research university. Its main campus is located in Benguerir, near Marrakech, with branches in Rabat and Laayoune. The university is an applied research and innovation-oriented institution committed to economic and human development, with a focus on Africa.
UM6P prioritises research and innovation relevant to Morocco and Africa by focusing on topics such as industrialisation, food security, sustainable development, mining, behavioural and social sciences.
It federates a number of schools and research institutes, covering science and technology (agriculture, mining, energy, medicine, chemistry, computer science…), social sciences and business administration.
The University welcomed its first cohort of students in 2013 before being officially inaugurated on January 12th, 2017. Since then, it has become a leading research institution dedicated to collaboration between Africa and the rest of the world. As such, UM6P has entered into numerous partnerships with universities in Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas.
