Its enthusiasm for the development of circular economy products is self-evident. Producing creative high-value stationery pens can not only increase the application sources of marine waste, but also create innovation and uniqueness in Taiwan’s stationery manufacturing through export trade.
The Whale Eco Pen is made from recycled plastic of “sea waste floats and post-consumer products” and the design of the pen clip is inspired by the leisurely posture of whales in the sea.
The modular design allows you to freely switch between fountain pens and ballpoint pens, which can further reduce production costs; the packaging is based on the image of undulating waves, it can be used as a pen holder, not only helps reducing waste, but also create a wonderful second life for packaging.
Due to long-term immersion in seawater, recycled ocean plastic waste has deteriorated usage conditions, only by finding application methods can we truly and effectively utilise marine waste.
In view of this, to further implement sustainable management, the Plastics Industry Development Center (PIDC) in Taiwan guided Z-Yuan Industrial Co, LTD has undertaken the project of the Small, Medium and New Enterprises Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs to design and develop a writing pen made from marine waste recycled materials and post-consumer recycled materials.
Approaching by a circular design, they have successfully produced the “Whale Eco Pen,” which features ocean imagery from packaging to product, combining aesthetics, environmental friendliness, and practicality.
The casing of the Whale Eco Pen contains 30 per cent marine waste. It is made of recycled plastic from discarded floating balls recovered from fishing boats docked at the port, plus certified recycled materials. After testing, it can break through physical property limitations to make high-quality product.
In terms of design, each part of the pen is composed of modular design for both fountain pen and ballpoint pen.
Z-Yuan Industrial Co, LTD emphasizes nature, simplicity, and functionality. Therefore, the development of recycled pens involves selecting natural colours and eco-friendly materials, maintaining a minimalist design, and continuously developing new natural colours. While embodying the brand’s philosophy, it also highlights the environmental and sustainable aspects of the product.
The pen clip shape of the Whale Eco Pen uses a curve to represent the way a whale swims leisurely in the sea, injecting a sense of agility into the writing pen, making every writing moment an elegant rhythm.
The product packaging continues the same theme, taking advantage of the characteristics of corrugated cardboard through structural design and curved cutting, so that the Whale Eco Pen can be placed in the box, just like a whale swimming leisurely in the sea. This packaging can also become a pen holder and business card holder after taking out the pen, giving the packaging a second life, extending its usage, and reducing waste.
