Meliá Hotels International will celebrate 60 years of service excellence, tourism development and innovation this year. This achievement is testament to the vision and passion of Chairman Gabriel Escarrer Julia and his family who first rented a small hotel in Palma de Mallorca in 1956.
This year Stewart Moore, founder and CEO of EarthCheck will also celebrate 30 years of dedication to the development of sustainable tourism through the creation of EarthCheck the world’s leading certification and business advisory group for sustainable tourism together with the EarthCheck Research Institute.
What makes this celebration significant is that both leaders and their respective companies have committed to work together to deliver another 60 years of leadership in the delivery of market leading hospitality, tourism services and sustainable tourism infrastructure across the world.
Today Melia manages more than 370 hotels with nearly 100,000 rooms in more than 40 countries and employs more than 42,000 people. EarthCheck is now a global company which services over 1,500 hotels and destination clients in over 70 countries and in six languages. Both Meliá and EarthCheck owe their success to the ability of their founders to not only have a vision but the conviction and energy to make that vision a reality.
Meliá and EarthCheck have now established a global partnership to work together on identifying new forms of visitor experience development, sustainable design and construction at a destination level and smarter and more responsible business practices which will not only benefit their staff but the communities in which they operate.
“In 60 years we have grown from a small company to a multinational group with nearly 100,000 rooms in 43 countries, but we have never lost our family spirit nor our values. It is precisely thanks to these values, and a united and talented team, that we have been able to achieve responsible and sustainable growth and maintain our global leadership. Our deeper partnership with EarthCheck fits well with our growth strategy and ensures Meliá is fully prepared to face the future as market leaders.” said Gabriel Escarrer Jaume Vice-Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International.
One of the first steps of the new partnership will be to certify existing and new Meliá developments across the world under the EarthCheck Certified program including the redevelopment of Calviá Beach resort which was one of the first dedicated resorts developed by Gabriel Escarrer and his family. In addition EarthCheck, as a CDP compliant program, will assist Meliá to meet all of its future carbon reporting obligations and continue its leadership in water and energy efficiency through integration with its internal SAVE program.
“Meliá is guided by the desire to build a legacy focused on protecting and supporting sustainable tourism and the environment. With a corporate governance model that combines the rigor and transparency of listed companies with family business values, we have achieved significant alignment and we are excited about the next phase of our partnership which includes the inspirational work currently being seen in Calviá Beach.” said Stewart Moore, CEO and Founder of EarthCheck.
Meliá has been able to achieve its continued growth while at the same time respecting the principles of responsible tourism, promoting the sustainable development of the communities in which they operate and creating long term value for its stakeholders. Amongst the greatest strength for the group has been its capacity for innovation and transformation a quality it shares with EarthCheck which is now recognised for its commitment to leading edge scientific research and specialist advisory services.
