SIDC launches new certification programme in sustainable and responsible investment for the capital market

The Securities Industry Development Corporation (SIDC), the capacity building arm of the Securities Commission Malaysia, launched a new certification programme targeted at professionals in the capital market and financial industry.

The new certification is named CCMP-SRI (Certified Capital Market Professional in Sustainable and Responsible Investment). It is aimed at raising the competency standards of professionals in the capital market to meet the growing needs in sustainable and responsible investment.

“Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in sustainable and responsible investments in Malaysia and a wide range of sustainable projects are being implemented. There is a growing demand for professionals who could effectively contribute to and lead in sustainable and responsible investment products, aligning with the evolving needs in the industry,” said Tengku Zarina Tengku Chik, Chief Executive Officer of SIDC.

There were 68 sustainable and responsible investment (SRI) funds in Malaysia with net asset value of RM7.7 billion as of December 2023, a significant increase from just seven SRI funds in 2020 with net asset value of RM1.46 billion, according to the annual reports of Securities Commission Malaysia.

“Talent shortages present significant challenges across many aspects of nation-building, especially in our goals towards sustainability. Malaysia must continue to increase access to sustainability-related capacity building programs. We need all stakeholders in our ecosystem to work together to make our workforce future-ready in sustainable investment capabilities,” said Lim Hui Ying, Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Finance, at the launch of SIDC’s new certification programme CCMP-SRI.

She added, “SIDC’s new certification program in sustainable and responsible investment underscores the organisation’s commitment in equipping professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the evolving landscape of sustainable investment while contributing to Malaysia’s sustainability goals. This certification program sets a respectable industry benchmark, recognizing each individual’s acquisition of sustainable investment skills and raising the standard of professionals in the capital market.”

The new certification programme was launched by Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Finance, Lim Hui Ying, with the CEO of SIDC Tengku Zarina Tengku Chik, the Executive Chairman of the Securities Commission Malaysia, Dato’ Mohammad Faiz Azmi, the Chairman of Bursa Malaysia, Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar and the Chairman of Penjana Kapital, Tunku Alizakri Alias.

Meeting industry requirements

The CCMP-SRI certification programme provides a structured and flexible learning pathway for busy professionals. It incorporates a blend of e-learning, webinars/workshops, and collaborative learning sessions.

Participants have the opportunity to enhance their skills in sustainable development, ESG (environmental, social and governance) integration, and SRI (sustainable and responsible investment) products and structures, drawing upon best practices from Malaysia, Southeast Asia and globally.

CCMP-SRI graduates will be able to add sustainable and responsible investment principles and practices into their skill set and, therefore could take on roles that require an understanding of not only financial performance but also a broader impact of investment on society and the environment.

The CCMP-SRI certification programme has been developed through extensive research, benchmarking, engagement and discussion with the industry. About 74 industry experts contributed to the development of the new certification programme including industry consultants, the Curriculum Review Committee and Assessment Review Committee members.

The CCMP-SRI certification programme is mapped to SIDC’s Industry Competency Framework (ICF), offering clear pathways for competency development and ensuring that professionals can meet the evolving demands of the capital market. Currently, the ICF has 61 competency titles covering 149 job roles in the capital market. The ICF provides details of the required knowledge, skills and attributes (behavioural) of professionals for capital market activities.
